Health Regulations
It is generally advised that you be in good physical condition before embarking on any trip; especially if you will be engaging in some strenuous activities like gorilla trekking. The heat and long hours on dirt roads will also put some strain on the body. While in the country it is advised to drink bottled water instead of tap water.
An International Inoculation Certificate against Yellow Fever is required when arriving from an endemic Yellow Fever area.
You do not require this if travelling from the UK and Ireland. However, it is recommended that you be inoculated against Yellow Fever as Uganda has a tropical climate and is considered a Yellow Fever risk area. Good medical facilities are available in the main cities, however we advice that you take medical insurance before your arrival. Bring any special medication you may need.
Malaria risk is high and chloroquine resistance is a problem in Uganda. A prophylactic medication such as Mefloquine (Larium) or Doxycycline is recommended. Travellers should also carry malaria treatment such as Fansidar or Artenam (also available in the drug shops in Uganda). Again, please consult and discuss with your physician which treatment is most suitable for you.
Bilharzia is a snail born disease, found around inhabited lakeshores. Lake Victoria does host bilharzia. The options are either to avoid going in the lake, or get tested for bilharzia once every 6 months and take the treatment (Praziquantel).
What to Wear
Because of the warm climate, it is advised that you pack light clothes that can be easily washed. You can also pack a sun hat, sun glasses and a waterproof jacket.
One should also pack one or two light sweaters to cater for the cooler night temperatures. For those tourists who intend to go gorilla trekking or mountain climbing, you will be exposed to colder temperatures and you should pack accordingly.
What to Carry
For those embarking on Savannah Safaris binoculars will greatly enhance your experience during the game drives. For photographers wishing to take some scenic pictures or pictures of wildlife, zoom lens cameras should be carried. However, remember to pack light. Excess luggage will only weigh you down.
Passports and Visas
You will require a valid passport to travel. It is advised that it should be valid for a minimum of six months after the planned termination of your trip. You should also make sure that you have the appropriate visas for the countries you intend to visit. It is possible to purchase a visa at arrival at Entebbe International Airport or at any of our overland border crossings. If you intend to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda you will need a multi-entry visa to return to Uganda which can also be purchased at the border
Safety
Uganda has been home to some of the more gruesome atrocities in modern African history since its independence in 1962, particularly under the heinous dictator Idi Amin, but in the years since 1986 things have consistently improved.
After more than 20 years of stability, Uganda is now one of the safest country in Africa (possible the safest). However it’s sensible to take the same precautions that you would in any foreign country where you are a guest. Do not carry large rolls of money with you, you will be expected to be civil and respectful.
