Prince Edward Launches London 2012 Olympics Sports Legacy Programme in Uganda
His Royal Highness Prince Edward,
the Earl of Wessex, who has been on a two-day official
visit to Uganda, has launched the
International
Inspiration programme in preparation for the London
2012 Olympics. The International Inspiration programme
is a London 2012 Olympics sports legacy that aims at
improving lives of over 12 million children in 20
developing countries including Uganda. The programme has
had 79,000 teachers, coaches and young leaders that have
been trained to lead sports, physical education and play
in their schools and communities by learning new skills
“It’s less than a
year to the London Olympic Games and Paralympics in
Singapore. I am happy to be here to inspire young people
to get in sports to improve their lives. Just getting in
sports will inspire children and they have got to be
encouraged,” he said.
The project will be delivered in Uganda in collaboration
with Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Education
and Sports, Ministry of Gender and Social Development
and Uganda Olympic Committee.
Earlier, His Royal Highness had paid homage to Ugandans
who were killed during a terrorist attack at Kyaddondo
Rugby Club, Lugogo, as they watched the 2010 football
World Cup finals.
Later, Prince Edward attended a creative writing
workshop with selected up-coming writers at the Uganda
Museum. The workshop was part of a series of events
launched by the British Council to promote the English
language in Uganda.
