Prince Edward Launches London 2012 Olympics Sports Legacy Programme in Uganda

His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, who has been on a two-day official visit to Uganda, has launched the International Inspiration programme in preparation for the London 2012 Olympics. The International Inspiration programme is a London 2012 Olympics sports legacy that aims at improving lives of over 12 million children in 20 developing countries including Uganda. The programme has had 79,000 teachers, coaches and young leaders that have been trained to lead sports, physical education and play in their schools and communities by learning new skills

“It’s less than a year to the London Olympic Games and Paralympics in Singapore. I am happy to be here to inspire young people to get in sports to improve their lives. Just getting in sports will inspire children and they have got to be encouraged,” he said.

The project will be delivered in Uganda in collaboration with Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Education and Sports, Ministry of Gender and Social Development and Uganda Olympic Committee.

Earlier, His Royal Highness had paid homage to Ugandans who were killed during a terrorist attack at Kyaddondo Rugby Club, Lugogo, as they watched the 2010 football World Cup finals.

Later, Prince Edward attended a creative writing workshop with selected up-coming writers at the Uganda Museum. The workshop was part of a series of events launched by the British Council to promote the English language in Uganda.
