Speaker Elected CWP Vice Chairperson as Commonwealth Parliamentarians Mark 100 Years

The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga was on 27th July 2011 elected the Vice Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians.

Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga was attending the 57th CPA Conference in London, United Kingdom. Her election came at a time when the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association marked 100 years since its founding as the Empire Parliamentary Association at a July 1911 meeting of British Parliamentarians and Members from five dominion Parliaments at Westminster.

This year the conference attracted Members from nearly 170 Parliaments and Legislatures in the nations, states, provinces and territories of the Commonwealth who discussed issues under the theme of “Reinforcing Democracy”.

During the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Steering Committee meeting, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga was elected as the vice Chairperson to deputise the Speaker of Dominica Rt. Hon. Alix Boyd a positing that runs for two years.

The conference looked at measures of increasing the participation of more women in leadership positions, so as to realize that Commonwealth Parliamentarians stand as equal partners with a shared commitment to the common goal of advancing parliamentary democracy through the development and sharing of best practices.

Accepting her election as CWP Vice Chairperson, Rt. Hon. Kadaga, guaranteed her support to promote the values of women parliamentarians especially in the commonwealth by initiating strategic programmes to see that the percentage of women in leadership increases.

The Speaker is also the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (Africa Region).

Speaker Kadaga attended the conference with Hon. MPs Rosemary Seninde, Sylvia Sinabulya, Hood Katuramu and Elijah Okupa.
