President Museveni Signs the Land Law

President Yoweri Museveni has this afternoon signed and assented into Law the Land Amendment Act recently passed by Parliament, at a ceremony witnessed by the Government Mobilization Team that was put in place to sensitize the masses, especially in Buganda Region, about the need to have the law in place.

The team, led by Major Jacob K. Asiimwe, was appointed by President Museveni after forces opposed to the amendment went to the public spreading untrue and ill intentioned propaganda that the new law was a ploy to grab land from some sections of people in Buganda.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, President Museveni said that he is happy with the amendment because it will protect the people from eviction. He, however, said that he does not support the idea of taxing idle land, an idea that is being talked about by some people.

He said that socio-economic changes will come through education and not through financial coercion.

The President thanked members of the Government Mobilization team for the work well done in sensitizing the masses about the need for the amendment to the Land Law and asked all citizens to embrace and support it.

The Government Team comprised:
